Black Belt

Sometimes it's best to just go with the flow and not try and upset the natural order of things.

I have a favorite black belt that I wear.  It is, in fact, the only one I wear these days.  Danielle told me the old fashion standard of matching the color of the shoes with the belt was long gone, and it didn't really matter anymore.  Anyway, after I picked myself up off the floor after that one, I decided to wear the heck out of my favorite black belt, so I did, and I have -- whatever.  I put that baby on in the morning, and take it off at night, setting it majestically atop the mound of thirty or so lesser belts from by-gone days, old ropy looking things, fancy buckles that I bought during my "cowboy phase" and never had the guts to wear even once, a couple I bought too large just out of shear laziness, a cottony-knitted thing that jumped into my hand like a flying lemur before I could get out of the damn Active Endeavors store (I don't climb, don't even camp, really, I have no business in that store -- other than the seductive allure of the belts, or course).

The next morning I think to myself, "what belt should I wear?", and I look down at my old black leather friend and think, "Yes, you'll do quite nicely with my suede bucks, blue genes, and turtle neck sweater." -- and so it goes.  So it's my favorite belt, you get that.  Now something else has been happening...it's a shocker...it's getting curvy.  I don't consider myself a fat man by any means, but apparently this belt has, after repeated use, contoured to my belly-age and has formed quite a distinct "wow" in it.  I always put my belt on feeding it from the right to the left, wrapping around the torso, and pulling the excess through with my right hand and grabbing the buckle with my left, and snugging that sucker down.  Now, if I held the belt up by the buckle it doesn't hang straight down, no.  Instead, it corkscrews, and curves boldly to one side.

I noticed it this morning and was a bit horrified.  It's my favorite belt, so I decided to take action.  But what to do?  I thought I could just hang it from a hanger at night when I put it to bed and gravity would straighten it out, but that wouldn't work -- not enough mass for gravity to get the job done.  I ruled out brute force and just pulling it straight...it's made of leather...it's a ridiculous option.  Finally I decided just to reverse the action by reversing the belt.  Instead of right to left I decided to go left to right.  Now, maybe you think it's silly, but try it sometime.  I equate it to eating cereal with your opposite hand, or putting your dress shirt on with the buttons on the back.  It's a seemingly simple task, but completely locks your mind in a pretzel for a few seconds.  Once it's on it feels no different, but getting it there is a trick.  But that's not the worst part.

I met Danielle for lunch.  I was excited to meet her, we don't get to do that very often.  We went to a local bar and grill for a nice lunch.  We had a lot of fun little things to talk about, and I got caught up in the conversation.  I had to go to the bathroom before we even got to the restaurant and found myself 40 seconds into a 30 second fuse.  I excused myself and found my way to the restroom, got into the squirrel cage, got my bearings, and then the Lucy skit started.  Knees locked, tribal rhythm, beads of sweat forming, and my fingers clawing at my good old - never let me down - black belt.  I was an astronaut on Apollo 13 trying to get the right sequence for starting up the re-entry vehicle, "why can't I figure this thing out!!!"  I was into the launch sequence, the engines were firing, and I hadn't untethered the craft!  I took a moment, let my mind relax, and solved the problem in the nick of time.

I don't know if I'll reverse the belt again tomorrow.  I might just go back to my old comfortable habits.  But if you want to live on the edge, if you want to test yourself, if you want to walk on the wild side, try walking backwards all day, or hanging upside down for a few hours, or if you really want a thrill, wear your belt backwards.

Noah Elected Class President by "Wide Margin"

Despite strong competition from a class full of eager candidates ready to serve their fellow classmates, Noah emerged the "clear choice" earlier today.  Elections were held and the winner was announced, now Noah faces some interesting challenges as Miss Lewis's class looks to their newly elected leader to shepherd them through the malaise of a difficult fall term in elementary school.  A new optimism is buzzing as the class looks to finish out 2008 with chins held high.

Interviewer: Noah, were you nervous about the election?

Noah: (back turned, hand held flat across face) No.

Interviewer: What are your responsibilities as President?

Noah:  (from the back of his throat) Aaaugh!, (hands up in the air, with the scowl) I don't know!

Interviewer: Do you have a Vice President?

Noah:  Yes.

Interviewer: What els can you tell me about becoming President?

Noah:  (nearly inaudible)  ...nothing...

 - end of interview -

CONGRATULATIONS, NOAH!  We're proud of you!!!

Adventureland

Company outing...tons of fun!

COOOOOLD BEEEEEER!

We took the boy to a couple of Iowa Cubs minor league games. Next thing you know he's rigged up a vendors cart with my bungee chords and his used box of sidewalk chalk. He never said the words, but I knew what he was thinkin'.

Iowa Games Triathlon - Ogden, Iowa

Note to racers!

Iowa Games officials WILL NOT, I repeat, WILL NOT handicap your race time based upon the number of corndogs you ate at Adventureland the night before.
It was a short race including about 300 participants (including ex-Iowa football great Tim Dwight), 1/4 mile swim, 15k bike, 5k run.

Jeff's time - 1:23:13...not bad...considering...(Tim only beat me by 5 minutes...I'm either getting ready for the NFL, or he's getting older...you make the call!)

Hey, Tough Guy!

The location: the Old Mill Mall next to the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, TN. We had lunch and played 18 holes of put-put golf under neon lights somewhere inside the mall. We chewed gumballs from a dispenser Kosack...25 cents a pop. Five dollars later we were having a computer generated sketch made. Hannah is the one in the cowboy hat (neon necklace visible on top of the hat...for decoration).

Have You Ever Been To Washington D.C.?

I don't mean to post a negative Blog, however, I must. I recently traveled to Washington for some "politic"-ing, as they say. I was so repulsed by the crime and the general "vibe" of the city that I went on a self-guided walking tour. I captured these videos on my Blackberry and forwarded them to my CFO, Brian, who informed me that he immediately sent them to the Secret Service. All in good fun, but I didn't realize how menacing I looked with my bald head, trench coat, and sunglasses. Yikes!

I guess I shouldn't be so judgemental, maybe I was the one giving the city a bad name. Darn tourists!

Daddy - Daughter Dance Feb. 8th

It's a gala event, lots of dignitaries, lots of celebrity, lots of paparazzi...okay, no, not really. But they do have lots of punch, lots of cake, lots of candy, and lots of loud music. And best of all, one Daddy and two beautiful Daughters.

Meredith and I are seasoned veterans; this is our fifth D-D Dance. But Hannah's no spring chicken. The dance is for girls age four through the sixth grade. Hannah was just a few months short of her 4th birthday last February, so we decided to sneak her in anyway - under-age! The good part is that she danced like a 5 or 6 year old so nobody knew the difference. Anyway, this year was her second dance and both she and Meredith had a ball.

Every year, there's always one heart-stopping moment, the Bunny Hop. But, not to worry too much, I only loose track of them for a few minutes until they reappear hopping out of the crowd.

Happy Birthday Big Sis!

Today is my sister's birthday. In the interest of anonymity I won't say how many moons she's seen, but if we were in Sweden we would say that she is "forty tre." Ironically, we'd say the same thing if we lived near Maine, or Nova Scotia.

I thought for a long time about what to get my sister to celebrate this occasion. We haven't been much for exchanging gifts for a long time now, but, nevertheless, birthdays should not pass unnoticed. I heard through the "grapevine" that the highpoint of her day would be a trip to Wendy's for a new burger; I'm confident any gift I give will pole-vault over that gesture. So, I thought really hard and came up with something.

Let the unwrapping begin! When I was a little boy, my sister tried to "off" me. I can't blame her. Now that I have children, especially little boys AND little girls, I can understand the dinamics a lot better. Boys can be pests extraordanaire and then some. Following her around, teasing, inpromptu wrestling, lincoln logs hoarded, etc.; I'm sure it was more than she could take.

Anyway, fate interveined one fine day and found me ascending a flight of basement stairs with her descending the same. She was either finishing some knitting, or carrying the needles to their resting place for my mother (although I have to admit I never remember seeing anyone in my immediate family knit). As the gap between us narrowed I might have said something (probably did) like "up your's," but we'll never know...charges were never filed, thus no court transcript exists of those terrible moments. I don't even remember the specific instance of being skewered only the sensation of those needles sticking to the roof of my mouth and my sister calling for my mom. Like I said, the authorities were never involved, we kept it in "the family."

I know my sister is a good person. Every bit of fruit that has come from her life before and after the incident points to that fact. So, in my heart of hearts, I'm sure it was an accident. Wrong place at the wrong time you could say. But, true to my form as the pesky little brother I have carried the grudge. From time to time when it has served my interest I've reached into my bag of tricks and pulled out that little gem. Well, its too late for last minute shopping, and I don't like belated gifts, so here's my present sis, "I Forgive You!"

Ahhh!, that feels gooooood. Happy Birthday Sis! I'm sorry I've been a pest. You've been an awesome sister! Love, J

Hannah's Wii Bowling Demo - The Windmill

How To Clean Up a Frame

Lollipop Caught Moonlighting

We're just taking things day - by - day right now. We're not sure "why" she did it...she really doesn't need the money. We think she might have issues with getting older...some vanity possibly. Things have gotten a bit chilly with her lately.

The bottom line is that we're just trying to create a loving environment, and let her know that she truly can tell us "anything." More to follow...

Emmett vs. Wild

I watch a lot of "Man vs. Wild" with the boys, and it appears to be paying off. Aside from eating furry North American tarantulas, drinking your own urine, and boiling dead elk meat in a sulphur spring, we've learned a few life-saving techniques of our own.

For example: if you are sent to bed early, and in your angst, have twisted your body 180 degrees and can't find your pillow...go ahead and use a fluffy kitty. Particularly one with a good disposition (and one that's very very tired), however, any fat cat will do.

Good job Emmett! Now you're ready for your next extreme adventure: brushing your teeth after breakfast...

Remembering Linda...

ON THE DAY I DIE
by Jelaluddin Rumi

On the day I die, when I'm being carried
toward the grave, don't weep. Don't say,

He's gone! He's gone. Death has nothing
to do with going away. The sun sets and

the moon sets, but they're not gone.
Death is a coming together. The tomb

looks like a prison, but it's really
release into union. The human seed goes

down in the ground like a bucket into
the well where Joseph is. It grows and

comes up full of some unimagined beauty.
Your mouth closes here and immediately

opens with a shout of joy there.

New Year's Eve

A simple celebration; way too much food, including caviar from Dahl's, cream cheese, and blinis hot off the griddle...a particularly bad idea (tastes horrid), a bunch of kids, good company, dominoes and a little Mexican Train.

I started yawning at 9:00am...was laughing uncontrollably up until 12:00midnight, said Happy New Year to my friends, kissed my wife and headed to bed after a rough 12 months.

Thank you God for 2007. I pray that 2008 is just as amazing, and full of service to You.

Happy New Year!
